Official reports
indicate 300 dead across the country after an earthquake
that was felt from the Antofagasta region to the Lagos
region, which represents 80% of the Chilean population.
The magnitude of this earthquake was the largest recorded
in 50 years.
Concepcion was the most affected area, where a new
building of 15-steps collapsed and a 80-steps apartment.
In Dichato, the sea rose about 150 m and was literally
crushed. About 80% of the population was under water,
leaving 6 dead. There are also serious damage to property
at Talcahuano.
In the region of Maule, Talca specifically at 3:30
am, the earthquake devastated the city and destroyed
most emblematic buildings, much of the trade of Talca
is destroyed and the coastal sector, where the sea
came into Constitution. 237 people died in this region
and 150 remain missing. The mayor of the Region of
Maule said the damage was greater than the earthquake
of 60´s. The other cities were severely affected
like Parral Curico has no water or electricity.
After 6 am, a tsunami destroyed the island of Juan
Fernandez, a wave height of three meters and a speed
of 500km / h. There were 5 dead and 20 missing persons.
The tsunami affected Easter Island and Robinson Crusoe
Island.
In the metropolitan area, the earthquake was in grade
six on the Richter scale. As the epicenter between
Concepción and Chillán with 8.5 degrees
on the Richter scale.
The
earthquake began at 3:30 in Santiago, the movement
was in the direction of the coast to the mountains.
Communications were cut and in some sectors of the
capital without electricity. Supermarkets are open,
while gas stations are still operating. Transantiago
transport system is closed, but provides prompt replacement
of basic services. The main highway was destroyed
at different points. The most serious damage was Miraflores
and Etchevers bridge, there were no deaths.
Furthermore, the Arturo Merino Benitez International
Airport is closed at this time, after serious damage.
Authorities will resume the duties within hours.
The atmosphere feels at 13pm, today is psychosis,
especially gasoline supplies. The government thinks
that prices will not increase.
